Isolation of high nutrition value products from starch production industrial waste

Project no.: 01.2.2-LMT-K-718-02-0012

Project description:

Proposed research will contribute greately to the goals and objectives of the action plan of the priority, because it will investigate the by-products and waste resulting from the production of starch from wheat. AB “Amilina” operating in Lithuania is one of the four largest starch producers in the European Union. Although the company’s strategy is to make meaningful use of all recycled bioproducts, the “storage” of proteins, amino acids, phosphoric acids and other essentially beneficial substances remains in production waste (i.e. starch and sugar separated flour). At present, a significant part of this waste is recovered by the company at a low level in the form of feed or discharged into urban wastewater, thereby increasing the load on local wastewater treatment plants. The research will result in knowledge base about the nutrient isolation technologies, which will be adjusted to the particular objects that are present in Amilina byproducts. This will enable creation of precisely individualized functional food products in the future. After the project, spin-off company will be established to create the products and to bring them to the market.

Project funding:

This research project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments, under measure’s No. 01.2.2-LMT-K-718 activity “Attracting Foreign Researchers for Research Implementation”.

Project results:

Technology of conversion of the industrial by-products to the high value nutrition materials will be created. Also we plan to patent and publish related knowledge, prepare for the commercialization step.
